July 30, 2010   Feast of St. Peter Chrysologus, Bishop and Doctor St. Peter was elected Bishop of Ravenna in 424 and distinguished himself as a great theologian through presentation of insightful sermons to his flock.   File:Our Mother of Perpetual Help.jpg

"It is no coincidence that our beloved savior declared the Holy Spirit to be the Advocate (Jn. 16:7) and that Christ Jesus' bride, the Catholic  Church, declares the Ever Blessed Virgin also to be our Advocate. In truth, the Holy Spirit and the Mother of God have an intimate spiritual union. The Holy Spirit acts through His spiritual spouse (Lk. 1:41-3, Acts 1:14; 2:1-3)."1

Catholic Questions?

Commonly Asked Questions:

What is the best way to deal with spiritual attacks from the enemy and temptation?

Answer:

Perform sincere, loving acts toward God (show God you love Him):

"Despise these petty assaults (temptations) and do not deign even to think what they propose...turn your heart gently toward Jesus Christ crucified and kiss his sacred feet."1

(Don't struggle or dispute with the temptation. Remember Satan is a "liar and murderer from the beginning." Believe nothing he tells you. -M.R.)

"The sovereign remedy against all temptation, whether great or small is to open your heart and express its suggestions, feelings and affections to your spiritual director." 2

(If you don't have a spiritual director, ask Jesus Christ our loving savior to direct you and express your feelings and what the enemy is trying to do to you - to him. Also, ask our Blessed Mother's and St. Joseph's help. Cast your cares upon our savior.*When in doubt, ask the Holy Spirit in Jesus' name to guide you.)

- M.R.)

Can I pray any way I want?

While there are many forms of prayer (ie., vocal, meditation, contemplative) all prayer must be Christ centered prayer. The Holy Spirit inspires or prompts us to pray through Jesus Christ to the Father. Hence, we must always pray to or through our beloved savior, Jesus Christ (glorifying Him) (See Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph #2664).

How do I arm myself against temptation?

"Consider from time to time what passions are most predominant in your soul. When you have discovered them adopt a way of life that will be completely opposed to them in thought, word, and deed."3

(For example: if you're tempted to lust, recall that each person belongs to God, that a person is not an object to be used for pleasure or gain. Speak against all unchaste behavior. Perform chaste acts: practice keeping your eyes down and think of each person you pass as a precious soul who belongs to God. - M.R.)

Director Michael J. Ruggiero, M.A. will be happy to explain any Church teaching and will show you how every teaching of the Catholic faith has at least a starting point in Sacred Scripture (which is rooted in the Sacred Tradition of the Church - the knowledge the Apostles gained from their experience of Jesus Christ (his words and deeds) then made clear to them by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and the institutions, beliefs, practices and truths of the Roman Catholic Church - APPROVED BY THE MAGISTERIUM - all of which continue to be inspired by the Holy Spirit).
